It is unclear whether he will box on beyond the end of that contract in the autumn of That decision is likely to depend on whether he shows signs of slowing down. Older boxers can hit the age barrier at any moment, virtually without notice. While that is unlikely to afflict Mayweather as early next May, the interim does give Khan the time to be in the most potent condition of his life.
Challenge: But Khan has been told to up his dedication to per cent to reach Mayweather's level. All smiles: But Mayweather centre has warned Khan left is has to earn the right to fight him. He will have to remain grounded through the star-spangled hype which will precede this happening of immense sporting magnitude, complete with its chat show appearances on network television.
And where Alvarez whipped up the support and hard cash of tens of millions of his Mexican fans, Khan will be expected to excite massive interest in Asian communities in America, Britain, the Middle East and across the world. No matter how wary the British reservations may be about his chances of dethroning the great Mayweather, there is certain to be a trans-Atlantic invasion of Las Vegas next spring.
And, in one crucial sense, the belief that Mayweather is omnipotent works heavily in favour of our highest profile ambassador for Anglo-Moslem relations. Khan is totally convinced that his speed and skills can overcome Mayweather.
Even if he fails in that ambitious bid for ultimate ring glory, no-one will think any the worse of him. And if he were to lose heroically in a terrific fight he will enjoy enormous exposure and acclaim around the world — with his market value for future world title challenges as significantly enhanced as his experience of the mega-occasion.
Crystal Palace. Man City. Aston Villa. West Bromwich. Man Utd. West Ham. Sheff Utd. Season at a glance Live tables Fixtures Scores. More tables. One slight very subjective disagreement, I do actually get excited about the prospect of Khan vs Mayweather.
It would be a great match of skills. Great article. When Maidana inevitably gassed out, Floyd started to do his number and won the fight by a point or two. When he got tired, he produced a great jab that bewildered Floyd at times. I found myself pulling for Floyd to out-jab Maidana and put him in his place — how come a good ex-amateur would let a common lackluster campaigner pass himself for a boxer? Something happened to the shoulder roll, it was missing from the fight, perhaps Maidana scared it away.
Khan has the style to give Mayweather a run for his money and even outrun him if he can bear the stress and maintain discipline. But what you mention on the Maidana jab really stood out to me. Floyd only seemed to perform that move in times of limited threat. That is, when he new he could get away with it. Apart from FMJ being technically gifted, the bloke is obviously a champion because of the stuff between his ears. Short and to the point Dan. And true, ego has won many a fight!!!
Methinks the analysis may be a promotional argument from the outside. Every littlle bit helps, huh! Note my tongue is planted firmly in cheek! He wears the crown. It would be up to AK to come and get it. Know what I mean? Also see cover of June Ring Magazine. That is, Maidana over AK. To quote from the article,.. Fair point on the the challenger having to take the title from the champ. As for whether Floyd chose the better man, Khan did get a result against Maidana and indeed took an awful lot of his best shots.
Weird game. FMJ has looked so good for so long. That even a slight off night would make anyone say that he is in decline. Is that true? It must be draining. He has a habit of throwing the plan out the window and trying to win the tough guy image. You and Grampro both have pointed out the same point on Khan i. One thing is for sure, if it came down to purely a match up of boxing IQ then Khan would get nowhere.
Also he looked like he was using a lot of unnessasary energy burning movement which is why he probably was holding so much. Thanks for taking the time to comment Gram, some excellent insights. I would just counter with a couple of points although your rationale for Floyd winning is perfectly reasonable. I felt that in comparison to previous Khan outings he actually held a lot less in this fight, he was just more effective when he did so i.
Not condoning it but in the pro game it happens, Floyd certainly does it well when he needs to Great comment though Gram, I very much appreciate you taking the time. He is champion and probably the best boxer of our generation for a reason. If anything, you are the one who is blinded by subjectivity.
What, you think he can go on forever? The likelihood of Floyd being beaten goes up signficantly with every fight he has because that is the nature of age and boxing. Interesting thought, a fellow Brit beating Mayweather. My only problem with Khan is that he seems to go off the reservation at times and forget the game plan.
Of course Mayweather has got to agree to the match up first and as good as he is he does tend to dodge the difficult mathes. There seemed to be an improvement in that department against Collazo. Thanks Chris. Agreed; its all about timing and I agree that If Mayweather fights Khan next the time is right for a Khan victory.
I think Mayweather knows this and he will take a rematch with Medina. Watch this space. Good article as always Fran. I agree, I think Khan has a good shot at beating Mayweather. Getting to be a habit, a little spoiling is par for the course in the pros but Khan is a bit OTT. Not to take away from a very impressive performance and footwork by Khan but shocking job by Collazo, failing to cut the ring off or at least try to come in behind a jab! Maidana is much improved with Garcia and probably was at his most motivated ever with a crazy brawling work-rate against Mayweather.
However, I seem to remember Khan teeing off on him pretty much at will for many rounds before almost getting knocked out! Never a big puncher but his speed, work-rate and accuracy broke down plenty of guys over the rounds in the lighter divisions. Collazo is admittedly tough and did get knocked down but did not really seem bothered by the punches for the most part. I always enjoy seeing Khan fight and am glad he seems to still be relevant near the top of the sport.
He can certainly be a bit irritating personality-wise but like you, not sure why the out-and-out hatred from many. I would love to see the fight, certainly more than I want to see Floyd beat Pac which I have always said he surely would. Just think it would be something interesting rather than rolling up another Latin American for Floyd to disassemble. The spanish translator translated wrong.
Nice article though. Ahhh, thanks for the correction. It did surprise me because Mayweather held his ground pretty much throughout. Hunter seems to have done something about that. I am really looking forward to see how he develops. It might also be the case the Floyd would opt for Pac than Khan, who knows. Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Perhaps he's banking on Khan getting tired but the Brit continues to land the telling blows and then evade any response. Any blows Collazo is landing are just glancing rather than penetrating. Again a late flurry gave Khan an untidy round Collazo down early in the round after a cracking right hand! Recovers without any fuss but Khan looks to unload after that success. Collazo continues to walk forward, attempting to march Khan down but the Brit looks strong and keeps him at bay.
The American does land a left but again Khan takes it and carries on. Collazo seems more than happy for Khan to come at him but he's already well behind on the scorecards and needs to make an impact sooner rather than later.
Almost immediately a Khan left almost repeated the dose but although Collazo reeled back he managed to stay upright. Collazo began boxing with his hands down in an attempt to lure Khan out of composed posture but was repeatedly picked off for his trouble Collazo can't get close enough to Khan to dominate on the inside and when he does, Khan holds. Collazo tries to march the Brit down but he's repeatedly beaten to the punch by the younger man.
Khan on top again in this session but Collazo does land a couple of shots flush in the closing seconds. It's easy to say that if Khan keeps his concentration he wins the fight but so often he gets dragged into a brawl. But he starts this round well too with a left-right combination.
The same shots come in again at frightening speed with a minute of the round gone. Collazo is not proving hard to hit right now. The American gets through with a left hand but Khan shrugs it off and continues his attack. Another heavy right staggered the New Yorker and even though Collazo is naturally the larger welterweight Khan looked physically the stronger when they came to close quarters. Here we go. A slow start but Khan is on the front foot as he looks to get in and then get out of trouble.
Collazo largely paws in response and Khan defects the blows away before Khan responds with two flurries which puts the New Yorker on the back foot. A confident start from the Brit. The first time he opened up he sent Collazo backwards with a solid right and he repeated that success moments later.
Comfortably his round Amir Khan is on his way to the ring. He really has to win this fight, not just to keep his hopes of facing Mayweather alive but to have a future at the top of the sport. Jeff Powell reveals: ' While the crowd booed Broner from start to finish of his win over the smaller, hand-picked Carlos Molina, a buzz went round ringside when it was revealed that Maidana is now weighing lbs, which is 21lbs above the welterweight limit. Mayweather is one pound over at Molina comes out looking to get the knockout he needs.
He throws a flurry of punches and forces the pace but Broner doesn't look too bothered. He loses the round but should take the fight without any fuss. Broner's jab connects with Molina at the start of the round but he starts to showboat, much to the chagrin of the crowd who boo the brash upstart. Broner doesn't care though and thumps his chest in response and sees out the round comfortably.
A quieter round from Broner and this hasn't been a performance to completely appease the doubters. Molina has been out of action for almost 18 months but has had his moments although he's heading for a wide points defeat. Meanwhile, Amir Khan and Luis Collazo are warming up backstage. They're on next. Molina has a couple of moments in this round when he lets his hands go but he is otherwise constantly being forced back by Broner who is pulling away on the scorecards.
His face is pretty marked up with three rounds to go. Into the second half of this round fight and Broner continues to bully Molina who is struggling to make an impact. Broner went from lightweight to welterweight so he was always going to be the bigger man in the ring tonight and that size difference is taking its toll on Molina. Mike Tyson is in the crowd and he sees Broner continue to make his mark on the fight.
Molina is struggling to cope with the bigger man and it is Broner who is landing the telling shots. Better from Broner as he begins to put his combinations together and finds the angles. Goes to the body with a minute to go and these punches look to be taking their toll for the first time in the fight. A couple of shots go into the head and an uppercut lands flush. Broner gets away with a warning at the start of the round when he grabs Molina and throws him to the canvas.
Molina gets up and goes to work but not many of his punches get through. Lands a good right to the body however as Broner comes to realise he's in a fight. He comes back well in the final minute however, landing several jabs but Molina again finishes strongly. Molina finds the target with the right hand which momentarily stuns Broner but the America shrugs to suggest he wasn't hurt.
The underdog finishes with a fast flurry to nick the round. Molina, whose last fight was a defeat to Amir Khan, knows he has to jump on Broner if he is to shock the American. He tries to do just that early on but eats a sharp jab for his troubles.
Plenty of exchanges in the first round but Broner edges it. Jeff Powell adds: 'There was louder disapproval of the trash-talking Adrien Broner as he came into the ring accompanied by a foul-mouthed rapper. I think the whole boxing world to a man was delighted when the brash American was beaten but he has dropped down to light-welterweight to face Carlos Molina tonight. The judges scores were , and Love looks to have weathered the storm as the fighters come out for the 10th and final round.
Barring something dramatic here, he should take the fight by decision. Since being knocked down, Love has fought back well in the last two rounds. Perhaps Periban punched himself out with the earlier onslaught. Periban has Love in all sorts of trouble in the fifth round, laying siege before finally putting his opponent down with 30 seconds remaining. He tries to finish the job but Love hangs on to hear the bell. The unbeaten man is part of Mayweather's team and is not expected to lose Periban came out of his corner looking to go to work after Love had had the better of the first two rounds.
He landed a few clean shots but needs to keep it up. After the weigh-in yesterday, Floyd Mayweather expressed concern at Marcos Maidana's gloves. The Argentine had had them custom made in the colours of his homeland but Mayweather claimed there was not enough padding. It has, of course, been resolved but Maidana will wear a different type of glove than he had originally planned.
The unbeaten J'Leon Love takes on former world title challenger Marco Antonio Periban in what promises to be an entertaining and close fight. The smart money might be on Amir Khan winning on points but I think there are enough doubts about his performance against Julio Diaz last year and his month lay-off to back Luis Collazo by TKO. Tell me what you think by emailing martin. De La Hoya has just finished a press conference giving his side of the dispute and did not rule out replacing Schaefer.
You can read the story here. Personally, I think De La Hoya is in a bad position. If he loses Schaefer, he loses Floyd Mayweather and no doubt the rest of the fighters signed to mysterious advisor Al Haymon. Anthony Ogogo introduced himself to the Las Vegas crowd with the third stoppage of his fledgling career on Saturday night.
Read more here. Good morning and welcome to Sportsmail's coverage of what promises to be a stunning night of boxing in Las Vegas. If you're just coming in and considering calling it a night, don't. We've got some cracking fights ahead of us, not least the main event between Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana. Before that however, we have the loud, brash Adrien Broner against Carlos Molina as well as Amir Khan's first fight at welterweight against the dangerous Luis Collazo.
Interesting news of Maidana's weight. I've scored it but the scores that count are: , and My score: My score: Broner first. I'll be bringing you round-by-round coverage from here on in, starting with Broner vs Molina. Adrien Broner is back for the first time since losing to Marcos Maidana last December. There are four fights on the PPV card, the first of which is in the super-middleweight division. I'll keep you up to date with the action.
So, how do you see tonight panning out? If Adrien Broner is focused and hungry, he stops Carlos Molina. And in the main event, I reckon Floyd Mayweather dances his way to a unanimous decision win. Even after Campbell knocked Garcia to the mat earlier in the match at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, he still managed to control the fight and end it in the seventh round on Saturday night.
The legitimacy of the rise of Fernandez was strutting around the ring and, literally, asking Sanchez to punch him in the face. Now, I'm no boxing expert, but allowing free face shots does not seem like a good way to win a match. And so, unsurprisingly, Fernandez's taunting came before a powerful knockout from Sanchez. Fernandez fell into and, eventually, through the ropes and out of the ring, which ended the fight during the undercard for Canelo Alvarez vs.
